What Your CAPS Status Actually Means
JAMB on X, September 11, 2026, and a JAMB explainer video of September 17, 2026, reported by Punch, Tribune and TVC. We read both on September 24, 2026. The status meanings and the quotes are JAMB’s own.
We publish the date so you can judge how fresh this is rather than take our word for it.
JAMB CAPS is currently down. It has been unavailable since September 24, 2026, and it was still down when we checked on September 26, 2026. What the outage means for you
Most of the panic we see in September comes from reading a CAPS status as a verdict when it is a stage. It helps to know the order the stages run in, because every label below is a position in it.
Your school’s admission officer proposes you. The head of the institution then recommends you to JAMB. JAMB approves or disapproves the recommendation. Only after JAMB approves do you accept or reject. That order is from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting and its explainer of 11 September 2026, and nothing in it lets a school admit you by itself.
In JAMB’s words, a school may recommend you, but it is only valid once JAMB officially offers you admission. Which is why the advice that follows every one of these statuses is the same: rely on JAMB’s official channels, not on what an office told you.
Not Admitted
Either your school has not yet sent your details to JAMB, or you have not yet been considered. It does not mean you have been rejected, and while admission is still open it is not final. Schools release in batches over weeks, and a status reading Not Admitted in September can change in October.
JAMB’s own instruction for this one is to keep checking. What it should also prompt is a look at whether your score and course are realistic where you applied, rather than a conclusion that the cycle is over for you.
Admission in Progress
Your case is still being processed and has not been concluded. This is the one most often misread as an offer. JAMB put it plainly in the September 17 explainer: “Admission in Progress does not mean automatic admission.”
It also does not tell you how far along you are. In that same explainer it covers two different positions: you were proposed and are waiting on the head of the institution, or you were recommended and are waiting on JAMB. So a page reading Admission in Progress does not tell you which of the two you are, and nobody can read that off it for you.
It is a good sign. It is not a place.
Proposed for Admission
You have been proposed, and the proposal is awaiting further processing. This is the earliest of the three waiting states: it means your school’s admission officer has put you forward, and the head of the institution has not yet recommended you to JAMB.
What to do is wait and keep checking. You cannot accept, you cannot reject, and there is no admission letter to print. It is not a guarantee of admission.
Recommended
JAMB has received your details from your school and is checking your eligibility. In JAMB’s words, “Your admission is not yet final.”
Again: wait and keep checking, and there is still nothing to accept, reject or print. And this is the stage where the distinction matters most, because a recommendation can be disapproved. If you do not meet the requirements for the course, JAMB can decline it after your school has recommended you. Being recommended is not being admitted.
Offered admission, or Admitted
JAMB has approved it. This is the only status that gives you something to do: log into CAPS and accept or reject the offer. Until CAPS says so, there is no offer to act on.
Two things follow from it. The admission letter is printed after you accept, not before. And accepting the offer and paying an acceptance fee are separate steps, with the school setting its own deadline for the second.
Accepted
You have taken the offer, and what happens next belongs to your school: its own registration, its fees and its deadlines. Follow the steps it publishes.
Why your labels may not match this list
JAMB’s two explainers use slightly different labels. The September 11 one lists Proposed for Admission and Recommended separately. The September 17 video uses three labels only: Not Admitted, Admission in Progress, Admitted. So your CAPS may show the broad “Admission in Progress” or the more specific “Proposed” or “Recommended”. They describe the same stages, and neither version is the wrong one to be looking at.
One deadline attached to all of this
Offers from 2021 to date that nobody accepted or rejected revert to Not Admitted after 30 September 2026. If your status is Admitted from an earlier year and you left it alone, that is the date that closes it out.
Our own line, not JAMB’s
Nobody can buy you a status change. There is no payment that moves you from Recommended to Admitted, and anyone offering one is selling you a stage that was going to happen or a stage that was not. That is our position and our wording, not something JAMB said in either explainer.
Nobody can see your CAPS status but you, and whoever you choose to give your details to. If yours is unclear, or it changed and you are not sure what the new one means for your case, that is worth asking about rather than guessing at.
